As organisations worldwide cut costs through downsizing – a recent McKinsey report indicates that in order to return to full employment, the US will need to create 21 million new jobs – any measures which may increase the robustness of employees may be welcome.
Both academic research and practitioner experience indicates that downsizing in organisations saps confidence and morale in employees, leaving them not only unable to face challenges inside the organisation, but also to fare well outside it.
Although employee resilience is a problematic concept, one element of resilience – self-efficacy – does appear to be amenable to change. This has been shown to have enormous implications for performance generally as well as the well being of employees, so this will be the focus in this mindstretch®.
